This tutorial series focuses on creating large-scale explosions on water. We will look at creating several scenes with different types of explosions. Both in scale and in type.
Such simulations are quite often used in game cinematics, movies, etc.
After studying these lessons, you will be able to learn to combine particle and volumetric simulations, deepen your knowledge in creating FLIP simulations, save and use caches. All simulations are created from scratch. The tools developed during the lesson can be used to build almost any type of water explosion.
Complex explosions, as a rule, created from several elements and combined into a single one. We’ll also use this scheme – split the explosion into multiple simulations, make a separate render, and then combine it all in a compositing program. For this, I use the Nuke, but the assembly is quite simple, so you can use any software you know. We will also learn how to render all necessary layers (AOVs) in Mantra.
All lessons are divided into 2 parts.
In the first, we will look at creating a basic explosion. A large amount of time is devoted to the source creation, because it is one of the most important elements of any explosion simulation. I will also pay attention to the creation of additional elements, the setting of FLIP and PYRO simulations and final render.
In the second part, we will try to reproduce a large-scale explosion (nuclear type). For this, we will use the setup from the first blast, but make it more optimized to save resources (using TOP).
In the final part, we will also look at the different types of explosions we can create using our setup, with just a little modification.
The lesson is designed for people who have certain skills to work in Houdini.
